The bonded abrasive grinding methods can achieve higher material removal rate, but higher surface precision cannot be achieved because the surface of the workpiece is scratched easily by the abrasive particles that are embedded in the grinding disc during the grinding process. During the grinding process, the key to improve the grinding efficiency is how to control the distribution of abrasive particles and sustain this state as long as possible.

A new planarization grinding method based on the cluster magnetorheological (MR) effect is presented to grind optical glass in this paper. Some process experiments were conducted to reveal the influence of the speed of the grinding disc and grinding time and grinding pressure during the machining process. The results indicate that the speed of the grinding disc influences definitively on grinding effect of this planarization grinding method based on the cluster MR-effect.
