Released April 19, 1909. Available: The Library of Congress. W. Griffith. Often credited with inventing many of the elements of film grammar (claims that he repeated in a famous trade paper advertisement in 1913), Griffith is usually cited as the first important director in movies. The reality is more complicated, but there is no question that Griffith changed the medium in a way that few others did. Born on a farm in Kentucky in 1875, David Wark Griffith was one of seven children. His father Jacob was a doctor, soldier, prospector, farmer, gambler, and politician who was emotionally distant from his children.

Bitzer mostly used stationary cameras and fixed lenses and simply devoted an entire reel of film to one job or position, grinding away at the same shot until the film ran out two-and-a-half minutes later. Editing at that time was still little more than gluing one reel to another. Although we can piece together a narrative today, with establishing shots of the factory buildings followed by workers punching in and then getting to work, there is no indication of how or even if the films were cut together.

Porter, who had recently been hired by Edison, may have been one of the cameramen. That could explain the empty sidewalk that fills almost a third of some compositions, a characteristic of many of his films. McKinley set a more ghoulish precedent as well. He was filmed attending the 1901 Great Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on the day before he was shot by the anarchist Leon Frank Czolgosz. Edison cameramen outside the exposition’s Temple of Music captured the stunned reaction of crowds to news of the attack.
